Choose at least one of the ways below to practice addition facts:
* Use a deck of cards (just the numerals). Turn over two cards and add the numbers.
* Roll two dice. Write the addition sentence that matches.
* Use dominoes to add.
* Use Uno cards. Turn two over and create an addition sentence.

Submit a picture of one of the hands on ways, from above, that you practiced.

Last week we spent a few days learning time to the hour and half hour. Spend some time today reviewing.

Make a clock from a paper plate or a sheet of paper. Write the numbers on it. (I would suggest a parent write the numbers to make them in the correct position and evenly spaced.) Use strips of paper, straws, or anything you have to make the minute hand and hour hand. Reminder, the minute hand is longer and the hour hand is shorter.

Make time cards such as 11:00, 4:30, 6:00, 5:30, 2:00, 10:30, etc...

Have your student choose a card and show that time on their homemade clock.

Then switch. The parent will show a time on the clock and the student can say the correct time.

There are some time videos and games to play below.

If using a tablet or phone the abcya game will not work correctly. If using a laptop or tablet it should be fine.

Read the story, "Where are My Animal Friends". Ask your student the following questions:
1. What is the title?
2. Point to the author.
3. What is the genre?
4. Who are the characters in the story?
5. Who is Raccoon and Goose looking for in the beginning of the story?
6. How are Goose and Hummingbird the same?
7. Why is Raccoon sad?
8. Who did Raccoon visit after he said good-bye to Goose and Hummingbird?
9. What happened to Caterpillar?
10.What do animals do when seasons change?
11.Who did Raccoon speak to last?
12.Why did the author write this story?

Today would be our 100th day of school! Find 100 items in your home! Group them in 2s, 5s, or 10s to make counting easier! For example, you can find 100 socks! Put them in groups of 2 until you have 100! Or, you can find 100 noodles. Put them in groups of 10 until you have 100! If you do not have 100 of something, you can mix and match. For example, 10 stuffed animals, 10 shoes, 10 shirts, 10 cans, 10 fruit loops, etc....

I am so sad to be missing our 100th day of school, but we will celebrate when we return!

We had just started to learn about telling time on Monday and Tuesday. First grade should be able to tell time to the hour and half hour by the end of the year. We were working on time to the hour. I have posted a PowerPoint, some videos, and an ABCya game below to continue about telling time. There is also some Valentine telling time pages if you have a printer and would like to complete. There is nothing to turn in with this assignment, we just want them to continue working on the skill. :)

Practice spelling words again today. The words are difficult this week because they all make the same /r/ sound but have different spellings such as er, ir, ur.

At this point we will still take our spelling and reading tests on Friday if we are at school.

There are snowman read alouds, brain breaks, games, and crafts. Spread the activities out throughout the week.

Use any supplies at home to make a snowman (crayons, paint, cotton balls, construction paper, etc...). There are ideas below. You don't need to do each one. Just choose one or create your own idea.

We have been learning about nouns in class.

Watch the noun videos.

Create a noun poster. There are examples below. Be neat with handwriting and coloring. Be creative! Have fun! Submit a picture of your noun poster to google classroom. Assignment due by Jan. 9th

Find three 3-dimensional shapes in the house. Take a picture or video with the items and tell us what shape they are. (They also know the vocabulary words: faces, edges, and vertices. See if they can explain those words to you while showing off their 3d shapes.) Turn in the picture or video to Google Classroom for a grade. Assignment due by Jan. 9th

Example: If you have a can of green beans, the can is a cylinder. It has 2 faces.

I have also attached a link for a game they can play on ABCya and a link for videos. (ABCya will work on a desktop or laptop, it will not work on a tablet or phone for free.)

Review skip counting! Count by ones, twos, fives, and tens.

Have your child open the reading book to the Big Circle. Talk about the title, author, and illustrator. Have your child take a picture walk and make a prediction about the story.

Have your child read (if they are able). If not then the parent can read. By the end of the week, your child should be able to read the story independently.

As reading, ask your child questions about the story like the ones below:

1. How does T. Rex feel when he wakes up?
2. How do you think Big T. Rex will find meat to eat?
3. What doesn't Big T. Rex like the herd's circle?
4. What did the herd of dinosaurs do to protect the baby?
5. What did T. Rex do last in the story?
6. Why is The Big Circle a good name for this story?
7. Tell one of the characters in the story.
8. What was the problem in the story?
9. What was the setting of the story?

Have your child read the story a few times to increase fluency.

There is a CUBES video to watch below. It gives a strategy for how to solve a word problem. Please practice this strategy with your child.

They will not need anything prepared for the meet...just their fingers :)

Choose one scavenger hunt. You can either print and submit a completed picture on google classroom or write the items on a sheet of paper and turn in a paper copy to the classroom.

A reading test was sent home in the packet today. In class we read each question and choice to the students. They do not use the reading book to find answers. It is their comprehension of the story. We do not help students find the answers.

For the spelling test, use the spelling words at the bottom of the newsletter. (If your child has challenge words use the list given.) Give your child a spelling test. In class the teacher says the word, a sentence with the word and end with the word again. For example:

Upload the completed reading and spelling tests to google classroom by Monday, Nov. 9. Please return the completed reading and spelling tests when we come back to school.

Join us on a google meeting on Nov. 9. If your child is unavailable, that's fine. I know many parents work during the day and cannot get their student on to a meet.

To join a google meeting from a desktop or laptop click on the meeting link on the front classroom page. If you are joining from a tablet you may need to go to settings and find the meeting link.
